JIG: Bio

JIG - violin,programming,songwriter,producer

„I am a violinist and I compose songs which, above all, move me... I dont think about what will become of them. I have two senses of time: As a performer I am led by my intuition but as a composer I have all the time I allow myself,..“

Matthias’s parents, both opera singers, introduced him to the music world from a side-stage perspective at the Viennese opera houses. Just after his fifth birthday, they handed him his first violin -along with a strong warning: never become a musician. Matthias found their warning very uninspirational. After several bands and multiple rebellions, his parents, in an attempt to end the musical antagonism, sent 14-year-old Matthias off to a strict catholic boarding school. Where he continued to rebel. At 17 he broke off his studies and began his career as a musician. Matthias then decided to screw his conventional, classical education and began playing with bands in various musical scenes. From Jewish music to rock; from avant-garde to classical pop; world and Irish music to theatre. After soaking up a diversity of musical styles, he moved to London to finish his first solo album. Through his album he met renowned musician (and great friend) Al Slavik, who eventually convinced him to move to London. After working with a variety of great artists and expanding his musical network, an offer to produce and write for the Austrian acapella group “Bauchklang” brought him back to Vienna. There, he continued writing for different projects and doing sessionwork for various artists. After finishing the Bauchkland album, Matthias started writing for a theatre called Dschungel Vienna. In the dance piece „Surprise“ Matthias even started acting (“a little bit”). The dance piece won the Stella Award for “best piece for young audiences”, and it’s success has led to a tour in 16 countries throughout the world, including esteemed venues such as the Sydney Opera House. In addition to his theatre projects, Matthias also began working with Phil Gould, co-founder of the legendary band level42, and recorded for his new album. Since 2006 Matthias has been balancing his work primarily between theatre and the Balkan band yok!, which he co-founded in 2007.
